I’ve been blogging for many years and my activities have been sporadic at best lately for a number of reasons. I closed my two main blogs mostly for privacy reasons – especially as it relates to my business and strategy.
I blog privately for the most part now. Just like the previous post, I’ve been "journaling" my weekly activities when I can. I find it very useful to write a daily summary of my activities as well as a weekly overview including missed and achieved goals. The funny thing is, when I’m done writing it, I look at it and think, who would even be interested in this stuff anyway. I have chosen to just save them on my hard drive.
There are many kinds of blogs out there, most are useful only to the owner and maybe a few close friends, others provide commentary or information about different subjects, current events or just a place for people to show the world just how much smarter they are than the rest of the world. I’ve never been much of a self promoter; I prefer to be the guy in the background, present but not the focus of attention.
My most successful blog was SOKY.biz which was a blog about small business and my ideas as it relates to starting, operating and managing a small business. I received many visitors and people would tell me that they read it when they met me at business or social events. The statistics showed that I was getting a good amount of traffic and I was even invited to be part of the Forbes Business Blogger Network which I accepted but never implemented the cross-link coding. I closed that blog mostly because I was too busy starting the magazine, but also because I wanted to keep my personal business ideas away from potential competitors. The fuzzy line between providing useful general information to small business peers, and providing strategic information to potential, perceived or real competition became so blurred that I opted to stop providing the information at all. Loose lips sink ships as they say.
So here I am on a quiet Saturday morning pondering the value of a personal blog and trying to decide its future. I suppose that I do have this strange urge to share my life with people who might have an interest, and I do enjoy looking back at the old posts myself. So I will continue to blog about my personal life, my achievements in business and even photos and info about our social life. Why? Because I can; because I want to; because I know there are some friends and family who read; because I like it.
To my critics, competitors, detractors, haters and stalkers I say be gone with you!
To those who read my blog because you are interested; thank you!
